A Legacy of Service Since 1996
The Somali Community Association of Ohio (SCAO) was established in 1996 by Somali community leaders who recognized the growing need for culturally responsive support services for newly arrived refugees and immigrants. As Ohio’s first grassroots Somali nonprofit organization, SCAO became the first organization dedicated to serving the Somali refugee community in the state.
What began as a small community initiative has grown into a trusted nonprofit organization serving thousands of individuals and families across Ohio through education, housing support, workforce development, health initiatives, youth programs, and community advocacy.
Our Beginning
During the 1990s, many Somali families arrived in Ohio seeking safety, stability, and new opportunities. Like many newly arrived immigrant communities, they faced significant challenges, including language barriers, employment, housing, healthcare, education, and navigating unfamiliar systems.
Recognizing these needs, community leaders came together to establish SCAO as a resource where individuals and families could receive guidance, support, and access to essential services while preserving their cultural identity and becoming active members of their new communities.

Over nearly three decades, SCAO has expanded its programs to address the changing needs of Somali and other immigrant communities throughout Ohio.
