The Somali Community Association of Ohio (SCAO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1996 to empower Somali refugees, immigrants, and other underserved communities across Ohio. For nearly three decades, we have been dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome barriers, achieve self-sufficiency, and successfully integrate into their new communities through culturally responsive programs and comprehensive support services.
Serving more than 30,000 individuals and families, SCAO has become a trusted community resource by delivering high-quality services that promote stability, opportunity, and long-term success. Our experienced, multilingual staff work closely with individuals of all ages, connecting them with the resources, education, and support they need to thrive.
Our commitment extends beyond meeting immediate needs. We focus on building stronger families, developing future leaders, expanding economic opportunities, and creating healthier, more connected communities throughout Ohio.

The Somali Community Association of Ohio (SCAO) empowers Somali families and other immigrant communities by promoting self-sufficiency through education, employment, economic development, advocacy, and culturally responsive social services. We are committed to serving all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or economic status.

To be Ohio's leading community-based organization serving Somali and immigrant families while strengthening cultural understanding, promoting community engagement, and fostering successful integration into American society.

For nearly 30 years, SCAO has transformed lives through programs that address education, housing, health, employment, legal resource navigation, youth development, and community engagement.
Families Served
in Housing
SCAO believes that strong communities are built by providing individuals and families with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed. Our programs are designed to address both immediate challenges and long-term goals by promoting education, housing stability, workforce development, health awareness, and civic engagement.
Through collaboration with public agencies, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and strategic partners, we continue to expand services that strengthen families and improve quality of life throughout Ohio.
SCAO proudly serves communities throughout the State of Ohio, with a primary focus on Central Ohio, while extending culturally and linguistically appropriate services to Somali and other immigrant communities in major cities across the state.
Our comprehensive programs are designed to support individuals and families at every stage of their journey toward stability and independence.
SCAO remains committed to expanding programs that strengthen education, workforce development, leadership, mentorship, public engagement, and community advocacy. By working alongside community partners, donors, volunteers, and local organizations, we continue to create opportunities that empower individuals and families to become self-sufficient, active members of their communities, and contributors to Ohio’s continued growth.
The success of SCAO is made possible through the support of dedicated community partners, donors, volunteers, and public agencies. We are proud to collaborate with organizations including the City of Columbus, The Columbus Foundation, United Way, and many other partners who share our commitment to building stronger, healthier, and more inclusive communities.
